Farmer's Market and an Open House

Farmer's Market

Tomorrow we will be heading out to the Tacoma Farmer's Market for our fourth and final Thursday of the Summer. We've had a fantastic time there this summer and have met some wonderful people. Tomorrow we will have a slightly different look... There won't be any free waters or kids crafts, but what we will be offering is a free blood pressure check. The Market's theme tomorrow is Mind, Body and Soul and thanks to some of our 'resident' nurses we will be able to serve people with a quick heart check! We will also have some literature on how prayer can help reduce stress. Please drop by and help out... or just stop in to say hey.

Open House

I am very excited to announce that our friends Antonio and Louisa Vasquez are launching a new business to serve and bless the city of Tacoma! They would like to invite you and anyone you know to an open house on this Saturday, September 27th from 11 am to 4 pm. Below is a flyer to give you more information (if you receive this blog via email you may want to visit the blog site to see the flyer in full).

Avoiding Arrested Development

This Sunday we will begin a new series entitled Avoiding Arrested Development. The series will be about how we can experience transformation in our lives. We are all prone to getting stuck in spiritual infancy, never really experiencing change in our hearts, our minds, or our actions. It's God's desire that we would be shaped into the image of His Son. (Romans 8:29) What does that look like? How does that happen?

In Romans 12:2 Paul uses the Greek word metamorphoo to describe this transformation. This is the same word used to describe the transformation that takes place in a caterpillar when it becomes a butterfly. Do you long for such dramatic transformation in your life? I do. I long to see a church that reflects the image of the Son to the city.

I look forward to seeing you all on Sunday as we embark on a journey of transformation.

Too Busy To NOT Pray

At New Community Church we have a strong desire 'to build a house of prayer.' We believe that a church that prays is a church that knows their limits, but also knows that God is limitless. If we are to build a re-producing, worshiping, missional, servant-hearted church, we will first and foremost need to be a praying church.

As many of you know, we currently have a once a month night of worship and prayer. We've really enjoyed these times together and plan on continuing these nights for the foreseeable future. However, we also feel like we want to create more opportunity for us to come together and pray. So this Thursday morning, 6:00 am at 711 St. Helens, we are launching a new, weekly, time for corporate prayer. We will be praying for our church and for other churches, for our city and for other cities, we'll be praying for ourselves and for other people.

Charles Spurgeon once said, "
All hell is vanquished when the believer bows his knee in importunate supplication. Beloved brethren, let us pray. We cannot all argue, but we can all pray; we cannot all be leaders, but we can all be pleaders; we cannot all be mighty in rhetoric, but we can all be prevalent in prayer. I would sooner see you eloquent with God than with men. Prayer links us with the Eternal, the Omnipotent, the Infinite, and hence it is our chief resort. . . . Be sure that you are with God, and then you may be sure that God is with you."

I look forward to seeing you there! By they way, bring your own coffee!

If you have been a part of the 20/20/20 group on Thursday morning, come and pray instead.

Why Shouldn't I Waste My Life

On Friday, September 19th we will begin a small group track based around Don't Waste Your Life. Don't Waste Your Life is a ten week series that will meet on Friday nights near the University of Puget Sound campus. Each evening will consist of snacks, a video and time to discuss the book. (Each person will receive a free book and study guide.) Instead of trying to explain the series I thought I would let the author do so.

If you receive this post via email you may need to go to the bog site to view the video.

This group is open to everyone. Unfortunately, at this point there will not be available childcare. Please sign up on Sunday or email us if you have any questions.

Why we do Foundations

At New Community Church we have a strong desire to build on solid, biblical foundations. This is why we run a ten week study called... uh hum... Foundations. This course unpacks our core beliefs as a church and invites you to give yourself to the building of this church. We consider it the next step after Alpha, so the course is limited to those who have already completed the Alpha Course.

Foundations will run simultaneously with Alpha beginning Wednesday, September 17th at 6:30 pm. In fact, those on the course will eat dinner with the Alpha Course attendees and then break away into a separate space at 711 St. Helens to discuss the material. Childcare will be provided.

Please sign up on Sunday morning or drop us an email to let us know you'll be there.

Why we do The Alpha Marriage Course

On Tuesday, September 16th, we will begin the Alpha Marriage Course. The course is available to all married couples whether they are Christian or not, whether they are a part of NCC or not. We will cover seven subjects over a ten week period: Building Strong Foundations, The Art of Communication, Resolving Conflict, The Power of Forgiveness, Parents and In-Laws, Good Sex, and Love in Action.

The statistics surrounding divorce these days are very grim and we want to see them reversed. If you feel like your marriage is strong, the Marriage Course will help you stay strong. If you feel like it's week, the course will help strengthen it. You will not be asked to disclose any issues in your marriage to a group. The evening will consist of dessert/coffee, a video, and then time for the couples to talk about the topic privately. Childcare will be provided.

Please sign up on Sunday or send us an email to let us know you're coming.

When: Tuesday, September 16th 6:00 pm
Where: 711 St. Helens, Tacoma, WA 98402

Why We Do Alpha

We hope you're all ready for the launch of four exciting new small group tracks for the fall (for more info on each one please visit our website). Each day this week I will be sending out a promo for each one. Today's promo is for the Alpha Course.

Why do we do Alpha?

The Alpha Course is a basic introduction to the Christian faith that has been attended by over 11 million people world wide. The reason we do it here at NCC is that it's a great fit to the vision we have as a church. Our vision is to establish church(es) where people's lives are supernaturally changed by God. Alpha provides an excellent environment for people to hear about Jesus, ask questions about Jesus, and have their lives changed by Jesus.

We really want to encourage all of you who haven't taken the Alpha Course to sign up for the fall session. The Course is extremely helpful for those who wouldn't call themselves a Christian and for those who may have been a Christian for 20 years.

This track is open to all and will include childcare. Please do consider inviting your friends to the Alpha Banquet which will be on Wednesday, September 17th at 6:30 pm at 711 St. Helens. This is the first night and will include dinner, a short talk and dessert. The remaining 9 evenings (all on Wednesday) and one Saturday morning, will include dinner, a short talk, and time for discussion. (Spanish translation available.)

You can sign up for the course on Sunday morning, or send us an email to let us know you're coming!
